SUPPORT
TO CERTIFICATION
Zimmark
offers several levels of support for a facility looking to reach ISO14000
certification. Our degree of involvement can depend on which step the
facility is at with respect to attaining ISO14000.
Step 1: Environmental Manager
The Client is to appoint a senior person as the Environment Manager.
Their job is to coordinate the implementation and operation of the Environmental
Management System to achieve ISO 14001 in the budgeted timeframe and
cost identified.
Step 2: Definition of Scope
Zimmark helps the client develop and author a scope statement, which
defines the activities, products and services to be covered by the Environmental
Management System (EMS). Included are the organizations' activities,
relevant products (including purchases) and the services of suppliers
and contractors who can have an effect on the program. All possible
environmental Impacts are identified and their inclusion in the initial
stage of the program are discussed.
Step 3: Environmental Policy Definition
Zimmark works with the client to prepare a documented Environmental
Policy. It must include commitments for legal compliance, the prevention
of pollution and continual improvement. The Policy is then distributed
to all employees and is made available to the public.
Sample Policy Definition:
• Continually improving the Environmental Management System
• Regulatory compliance
• Prevention of Pollution
• Maintain a framework for setting and reviewing environmental
objectives and targets, appropriate to the nature, scale, environmental
aspects, activities, products and services
Step 4: Environmental Audit
Zimmark conducts an environmental audit, which identifies the significant
environmental impacts and risks of the organization. Using a written
procedure impacts are identified and risks are assessed. Both direct
and indirect risks of pollution and resource-use under normal, abnormal
and emergency conditions are considered.
Step 5: Environmental Law
Zimmark helps the client Identify all environmental laws relevant to
the organizations' environmental impacts and risks. Zimmark interprets
the laws to show how they apply to the operations. Access to laws and
regulations for reference purposes is maintained in the documentation
system, which gets ultimately prepared.
Step 6: Implementation Strategy
Zimmark defines a staged implementation strategy with the objective
being overall improvement in each function of the organization. Zimmark
takes into account the need to comply with the law, reduce environmental
pollution, satisfy interested parties and meet the business needs within
available resources. Budgetary costs and associated savings are estimated,
and a business case (ROI) is determined for each objective for review
by facility Management.
Step 7: Assigning Environmental Responsibilities
The Client determines and delegates the environmental responsibilities
and authorities for all requirements of ISO 14001. The systems and procedures
are documented and communicated to all employees. At the clients discretion
Zimmark can assume some of these responsibilities or provide training
to site personnel.
Step 8: EMS Implementation
The client would allocate the human and financial resources required
to implement and control the Environmental Management System. Zimmark
would provide the necessary resources to implement and install the system,
identifying any resources required for any new technology and training
for any specialized environmental skills.
